Screen Cage vs. Screen Room vs. Sunroom: Which Is Right for Your Ocala Home?

If you’re looking for a way to enjoy your outdoor space more comfortably, you’ve probably come across terms like screen cage, screen room, sunroom, lanai, and screen enclosure.

In Florida, some of these terms are used interchangeably, which can make it difficult to know exactly what you need.

The easiest way to think about it is this:

  • A screen cage gives you a screened outdoor space, including a screened roof.

  • A screen room replaces that screened roof with a solid, insulated roof while keeping screened walls.

  • A sunroom creates a more enclosed space using windows and doors instead of screened walls.

Each option provides a different level of shade, weather protection, airflow, and connection to the outdoors. Here’s how they compare.

What is a Screen Cage?

A screen cage, also commonly called a screen enclosure, bird cage, or pool cage, is an aluminum-framed structure with screened walls and a screened roof.

Screen cages are popular throughout Florida because they allow homeowners to enjoy their patios and pools while helping keep mosquitoes, no-see-ums, leaves, and other debris out. Because the roof is also screened, you maintain an open-air feeling and plenty of natural light.

Screen cages can be built in different configurations and roof styles and can often be designed to extend an existing covered lanai. Depending on the engineering and dimensions of the enclosure, an open-view design can also reduce the number of vertical posts across the main viewing area.

Homeowners can further customize their enclosure with options such as different screen types, kickplate, privacy screening, doors, and white or bronze aluminum framing.

A screen cage may be right for you if:

  • You want protection from bugs without losing the outdoor feeling.

  • You want to enclose a pool or extend your patio.

  • Natural light and airflow are priorities.

  • You want to keep leaves and debris out of your outdoor area.

  • You want an unobstructed view of your backyard whenever possible.

For many Florida homeowners, a screen cage provides a good balance between protection and maintaining a true outdoor space.

What Is a Screen Room?

A screen room is similar to a screen cage, but there is one major difference: the roof. Instead of a screened roof, a screen room has a solid insulated roof with screened walls.

At Superior Aluminum & Design, our insulated roof panels typically have a 3-inch foam core between aluminum skins. This provides significantly more shade and weather protection than a screened roof. The solid roof can also incorporate fan beams, allowing for ceiling fans and lighting when properly planned into the project.

You still get airflow through the screened walls, but the space feels more like a covered outdoor room.

A screen room may be right for you if:

  • Shade is one of your biggest priorities.

  • You want better protection from Florida's afternoon rain.

  • You want to add ceiling fans or lighting.

  • You want a covered patio while maintaining airflow.

  • You prefer a more sheltered space without fully enclosing it with windows.

For homeowners who find their existing patio too hot or exposed, a screen room can make the space much more usable throughout the year.

What Is a Sunroom?

A sunroom takes the concept one step further. Instead of relying primarily on screens, a sunroom uses windows and doors to create a much more enclosed environment.

An existing covered lanai, for example, may be enclosed with insulated windows, sliding glass doors, or traditional doors. Depending on the design, homeowners can also incorporate knee walls and other features.

The biggest advantage is additional protection from rain, wind, pollen, insects, and changing weather conditions. You can still open the windows when the weather is nice, but when conditions aren't ideal, you have the option to close the room.

A sunroom may be right for you if:

  • You want greater protection from the weather.

  • You prefer windows instead of screened walls.

  • You want a space that feels more connected to the interior of your home.

  • You want the flexibility to open or close the room depending on the weather.

  • You're looking to convert an existing covered lanai into a more enclosed space.

Which One Should You Choose?

The best enclosure isn't necessarily the most expensive one. It's the one that solves the problem you're trying to fix.

Choose a screen cage if your main goal is keeping insects and debris out while maintaining as much of the outdoor experience as possible.

Choose a screen room if you still want an outdoor space but shade and protection from the rain are important. This is especially useful when you want to spend more time outside without sitting directly under the Florida sun.

Choose a sunroom if you want substantially more protection from the elements and prefer the flexibility of windows and doors over permanently screened walls.

One of the first questions we ask homeowners is simply: How do you want to use the space? The answer usually makes the right type of enclosure much easier to determine. At Superior Aluminum & Design, we build custom screen cages, screen rooms, sunrooms, patio covers, and other outdoor-living projects for homeowners throughout Ocala, Marion County, and surrounding areas.

We can look at your existing space, discuss what you're trying to accomplish, and help you determine which type of enclosure makes the most sense for your home.
